A brief history of...
County Armagh
County Armagh is known as the “Orchard of Ireland” because the land is so fertile. At the centre of St Patrick's efforts to convert Ireland from a pagan to a Christian country, is Armagh. The site of his stone church, the Damhliag Mór, was given to him by Dáire, the local chieftain in 445AD. Saint Patrick's Damhliag Mor, meaning “Great Stone Church”, was burnt and plundered several times by the Vikings and lighting and had been completely neglected by the eleventh century. The Saint Patrick’s Church of Ireland Cathedral was built on the same site in the thirteenth century although the present shape cathedral was rebuilt in 1765.
