County Derry
St Colmcille first named the area when he set up a monastery in an Oak grove at the site around 521AD, calling it "Doire Colmcille" ("Colmcille's Oak Grove"). Oak groves were sacred places for the Celtic peoples who once lived over most of Western Europe as these trees occupied important positions in the culture and ceremonial of the Celts.
