A brief history of...
County Galway
The Irish name for river is 'Gaillimh', but the precise origin of this county name is disputed. One version has it that Gaillimh was the name of the daughter of an Iron-age chieftain who was drowned in the river that runs through the county. It is the second largest county in Ireland, and there are several Irish-speaking areas in the west of the county.
