A brief history of...
County Mayo
meaning “Plain of Yew Trees”. The county was established around 1570, and was named 'Mayo' after the famous monastery and diocese. Mayo is also home to Croagh Patrick a mountain where St. Patrick is said to have fasted for forty days and nights. Clew Bay has 365 islands when the tide goes out, one for each day of the year.
