A brief history of...
County Sligo
meaning "an area abounding in shells". The poet and Nobel laureate W. B. Yeats (1865-1939) spent much of his childhood in northern Sligo and the county's landscapes. St. Colmcille founded a monastery here about 575AD on lands given by King Aedh Ainmire. Sligo is also home to the Holy Well, a historic place of pilgrimage.
