The name Tipperary is taken from the Gaelic “Tiobraid Arann”, which means “the Well of Era”, referring to the River Ara. Tipperary is known for its horse breeding (Coolmore Stud is the largest thoroughbred breeding operation in the world), its fertile agricultural land, and its hurling teams. Cashel in Tipperary, was chosen as the seat of the kings of Munster, from 370 to 1101. It was here that, in 978, Brian Boru was crowned and made Cashel his capital. |
