The Vikings founded this town. "Wexford" is derived from the Viking name "Weis Fjord" meaning "inlet of the mud-flats" in the Old Norse language. The deemed founder of the United States Navy, John Barry, was from Wexford. Former President John F. Kennedy’s ancestors were also from Wexford.
